Bug Lust
So as I've posted, I want to get rid of my Subaru wagon. Partially because of the manual transmission and partially because of the mediocre gas mileage. I've wanted an xB, but at ~$10K+ they are way out of my price range.

Somehow I recalled the VW "autostick" transmissions available in the old beetles. They are a manual transmission, but the clutch is fully automatic. And my poor coordination with a clutch is why I want out of a manual car. Plus the old beetles get upwards of 30mpg, and are damn cool. Perfect! (in my rationalization)

So I've been looking for an autostick bug in good condition. I want something that is ready to go, or not more than a few days work away from reliably drivable.

I went and test drove one car, which turned out to be a rather terrifying heap (important car-buying note, parts should not fly off the car while driving at 20mph). And have been keeping an eye out for others.

Well while surfing thesamba.com today, I came across this '62 Bug. It isn't an autostick, it's early enough to be a 6-volt bug, and shouldn't even be on my radar.

Except that I owned a bug briefly when I was 14, it had sat in a neighbor's yard for decades and was a rotted pile of junk. I never got it running or on the road, but it was my "first car".

That '62 is the same year, model, color, and interior as my first bug. It has the accessories I had or wanted on "my" bug (roofrack, parcel shelf, overrider bumpers). And is all around what I wanted "my" bug to look like.

I am smitten. I wonder if you can retrofit an autostick into an earlier bug...

A stock '62 with a 40hp 1200 would get 30+ mpg, but my own '71 1600 never did that well. The autostick is an IRS (double cv axle) tranny while the lovely '62 is a swingaxle car. Swapping in an autostick would require suspension changes and welding tabs onto the torsion bar tubes or a body/floorpan swap. Sorry

Well I do know where to find a autostick pan cheap. It does need an engine though...

Further thoughts. Would the '62 body essentially bolt up to the '69 autostick pan?

I could get the '62 and buy that stripped autostick from the bug mutilator in Plainville. Restore and upgrade that pan, and right about the time I've murdered the clutch in the '62 it'll be ready to swap over.

Are you just wanting to do this so you can get parts at Pep Boys for the ONLY car manufactured in 1962?

I thought I started this as the practical voice, but now you've got me excited about a resto-rodded IRS pan with early type 3 drums out back (wide-5 bolt pattern fits IRS cars) and wide-5 discs up front. On the other hand, if the autostick pan needs much welding, it could donate the necessary bits to the '62 and there wouldn't be any weird titling issues.

The easiest scenario, honestly, would be swapping clutches from time to time. With a little practice, it can be pared down to a one hour maintenance item. You could nest a few spare clutches into the spare tire in the trunk. A gear oil change, some miracle additives (a gooey character by the name of "Mr Moly" ushered the '72 bus tranny through a prolonged period best described as "screaming agonized death") and a magnetic drain plug can offset worlds of abuse in a Volksie gearbox.

Last question, my New England-dwelling amigo, is which member of the Class of '62 would be the winter car? I have the solution for you, in haiku form:

Cofi, and then me
Jeanette, then me again, owned
Pixel's Horizon

P.S. Can you help me reaffirm my Vanhood on Wednesday or thereabouts?

I don't know whether to be honored, or utterly terrified. :)

Sure, I can do van stuff on Wed, as long as it doesn't run too late. Call me after I get out of work at 4:30.
